Just as witty and insightful as her first book, So Here's the Thing is a humorous collection of advice and stories about before, during, and after Alyssa Mastromonaco's time working in the Obama White House. Like with her first book, Who Thought This Was A Good Idea, I cannot recommend this book enough.

Dear friends Fatima and Hassan, each with their own extraordinary gifts but out of place in the world, flee the Inquisitors of the Spanish Inquisition.  Hoping to find a sanctuary where they can escape the world, they seek the mythical island home of the Bird King.  But first, they must outrun the Inquisition's soldiers and overcome betrayal and their own doubts.  I loved this poignant tale of courage and love and jinn and shifting reality.

I picked this book up in a time where I needed an easy and quick story to follow and I did find that in Something Great and Beautiful, but as I ended the novel it really did turn into something much more meaningful. The story takes place all over the world but at the end of it all it imparts upon readers a “can do anything” sense that resonates deeply. I recommend picking up this book for a quick dose of inspiration when nothing feels as if it’s going right.

White Elephant: A Novel Cover Image
$26.99
ISBN: 9780062857750
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Ecco - March 26th, 2019

I have to make two picks this month, but for a good reason... both books are so good, you will tear through them. Start with The White Elephant by Julie Langsdorf and try not to recognize yourself, friends and neighbors. The community of characters is both familiar and intriguing, and you won’t want to let them go.

Daisy Jones & The Six: A Novel Cover Image
$27.00
ISBN: 9781524798628
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Ballantine Books - March 5th, 2019

When you’re finished, read Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Written as a series of interviews with a band from the 70s, the novel makes you want to play records, go to a really good concert and listen to the songs the band writes throughout the book. It’s fun, moving, sad and wonderful all at once.

Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster Cover Image
$18.99
ISBN: 9781419731402
Availability: Available to Order
Published: Harry N. Abrams - September 25th, 2018

My pick this month is Sweep by Jonathan Auxier. I loved this book. It’s partly magical and a little sad because the way the young chimney sweeps are treated is based on real life. I loved the characters and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened.

While the holiday season has long gone, it’s never too late for rom-com cozy feels, and that’s exactly what you’ll get from this Reese Witherspoon book club pick.
