It's Independent Bookstore Day and We're Turning 5!

Traditionally, the last Saturday in April is Independent Bookstore Day (IBD), when booksellers, authors and readers come together to celebrate indie book shops. It also marks an historic day for us: Five years ago on this day, our founder, Rachel Wood, announced that Scrawl Books would join Reston's small business community as the only independent bookstore selling new titles!

UPDATE: Orders, Curbside Pickup and Contactless Delivery

Things are evolving quickly, but we’re keeping on. Thank you for your continued support and patronage. We appreciate your decision to shop local! As we move forward, we wanted to make sure you were aware of our ordering, pick-up and delivery policies.  Like all businesses, we are trying to maintain a high standard of customer service while doing our best to keep our employees and customers safe. With that in mind, here are a few things to know about how our process works...

Ordering:

Community Reads and Recommendations...

It's hard to shop without coming into the store. We're still welcoming customers from 11-7 Mondays - Saturdays, and 12-6 on Sundays, but trafffic is definitely slowing down.  Many of our customers will ask for recommendations, and we're always happy to offer up our opinions.  We also ask customers for their recommendations to read ourselves and to pass on to other readers.  So if you're not sure what to read, I've outlined a few of my latest reads/listens.

And the Winner Is...

Caldecott, Newbery, Coretta Scott King, Pura Belpre and Stonewall Medals were awarded on January 27 by the American Library Association.  Two of our favorite school librarians, Heather Brown from Mosby Woods and Kate Clark from Lake Anne Elementary, came by to review the winners, the contenders and some of the truly great books for kids written in 2019. Not only did these amazing ladies talk to our Girl Power!

Welcome to the Scrawl Books Blog!

This February, we will celebrate two years in our current location (cue the confetti!) During that time, we've seen our neighborhood change -- new neighbors, new buildings and many new customers -- have graced our doorway, and we are grateful for all the good things they have brought with them.  As we continue to grow, we realize that it's time to create a platform outside of our newsletter and social media accounts to provide some additional insight into what we're reading, what YOU'RE reading and what the authors, editors and critics are talking about throughout the publishing indust
